TIPS for Effective Time Outs-
A Teaching Tool
(Part 1 of 2)
Specific Behavior-Kids need to know what behavior is linked to the time out…hitting, not following directions…
Consistent-Specific targeted behavior equals a time out every time.
Place-Use the same spot.
Immediate-as soon as the behavior occurs, state the reason…”No hitting. Go to time out.”
Brief-1 minute per year of age is suggested. A visual timer may help.
Calm-Parents and Kids- Some parents don’t start the timer until kids are quiet. Others require kids to be quiet at least 5 seconds before ending time out.
Withdraw Attention- This helps kids see that misbehaving is not the way to get attention, positive or negative.
No Fun Stuff- No TV, games, tablets, fun toys, games…in the time out area.
