                                                                        Supporting Your Child

                                                                   Managing Difficult Behaviors

                                                                                        (Part 1 of 2)

                                                                     BEFORE the Behavior Occurs

  • Observe what happens before the behavior occurs. Manage the trigger if possible.

  • Give clear, specific expectations. Telling a child to “be good” is unclear. Instead, you might say “sit quietly at the dinner table” or “do the chores without arguing”.

  • Adjust the environment. Are things like hunger, being tired, anxiety, or distractions making things worse?

  • Prepare kids for transitions. Warnings and find good stopping points are helpful. For example, “5 minutes until it’s time to clean up” and so on.

  • Allow “wait time” (3-7 seconds) after giving a direction or asking a question. Many kids need time to process.

  • Give kids structured choices. For example “Do you want to brush your teeth before story time or after?” “Do you want to read to your brother or to me?”
