Please find the district calendar here: http://bit.ly/2020_21VFCalendar. This will be a bit of an unusual year in that flexibility will be critical for our educational team --community, parents, guardians, staff, and students. We are sure of one thing-- things will have to adjust throughout the year. The calendar will be updated as things change so we will not be printing a formal calendar this year. Please follow this calendar and our news feed on the website for updated information. One big change will be some early out days for collaborative teacher time. These days will be much needed for the staff so they can prepare for two delivery models, in person and remote. We will be trying to cover each other within the building and will have minimal subs supporting the instructional process. This early out allows us to communicate with each other and continue to ROCK Valley Falls Academics! On these days students will attend school until 12:30 PM and then a bus will bring students home. If PreK - 5 parents do not have daycare in the afternoon, don't worry, please let your teacher know. Students who need afternoon supervision may stay at school. Students at school will be divided out and will be with the district paras while the teachers are working. For students grade 6 - 12, we are working on criteria in which a student may HAVE to stay at school. Some of the criteria will include missing assignments and failing grades. At 3:35 PM, we will be doing an additional bus route to bring those students home who have spent the afternoon at school. The bus will bring those students home a bit early as the bus may not be as full.
USD #338 will offer CLC again this year. Contact Wendy Gibbens, email@example.com for more information. Max of 18 full time slots. We will not accept any part time students unless we do not fill the full time slots.

Reopening Schools - Navigating Change Message from Dr. Watson, commissioner of education, "Today, the Kansas State Board of Education accepted the “Navigating Change: Kansas’ Guide to Learning and School Safety Operations” document. This is a living document that will be updated continuously to reflect the changing landscape created by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is critical to remember this document contains recommendations only, not mandates, to assist districts in the creation of their reopening plans. The document is housed on the KSDE website and can be accessed at https://www.ksde.org/Teaching-Learning/Resources/Navigating-Change-Kansas-Guide-to-Learning-and-School-Safety-Operations. Please check back regularly for any updates." A small group of teaching staff will be starting the process of examining the document chunk by chunk tomorrow. Another group of department heads and essential staff members will be working on the operations section. Each group will use data gathered from surveys, town hall meetings, and feedback sent to administration as part of the decision making process. The target date to have a draft to our parents and community will be early August for feedback. Don't let this document intimidate you. If we all work on this process together, we will have a great document for our community to help guide us this year and into the future! Many educators across Kansas have done an awesome job in providing guidance through these challenging time. A new focus for our students will be competency-based learning and project-based learning! Education will become more individualized to meet the needs of all students. How can this be a bad thing? I know as DRAGONS we will attack this new opportunity with breathing fire, excitement for our students, and helping each other out in the process! We all have to do our part. Let's demonstrate Dragon PRIDE in our endeavors!! Looking forward to digging in and getting started. Please don't hesitate to send any thoughts you might have on reopening via email to email@example.com.

Everyone who uses the roads has a role to play in safety. This includes large trucks and buses, cars, bicyclists and pedestrians. This contest lets children in kindergarten through sixth grade (ages 5-12) use their creativity and talent to help raise awareness of how to stay safe on the roads. https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/OurRoadsArtContest For Teens, Post Covid-19 Roads Pose ‘A Perfect Storm’ Of Risk Closed schools, fewer activities, less opportunity for summer jobs and the easing Covid-19 restrictions could prove dangerous for the nation’s teens as they take to the roads this summer. This post-lockdown phase corresponds with the “100 Deadliest Days,” the period each year between Memorial Day and Labor Day when the number of fatal crashes involving a teen driver historically rises. Here's how the state's four congressional districts fare with census self response: 1st Congressional District -- 61.3% 2nd Congressional District -- 64.8% 3rd Congressional District -- 70.5% 4th Congressional District -- 64.7% Counting the Homeless: Schedule change The U.S. Census Bureau released a new schedule for counting people experiencing homelessness in the 2020 Census. The operation was originally scheduled for the end of March, but health and safety concerns with COVID-19 forced a delay in these activities. Between September 2 and 24, the Census Bureau plans to send specially trained census takers to count people at shelters, soup kitchens, regularly scheduled mobile food fans and locations previously identified by the Census Bureau where people are known to sleep outdoors and at all-night businesses (i.e. transit stations and 24-hour laundromats). People experiencing homelessness will be counted where they are staying when census takers visit between September 22-24. A complete and accurate 2020 Census can ultimately help organizations provide better services, more food and improved shelter options for those in need.

Happy May Day! In reflecting on my own childhood, I remember May Day fondly. My poor mother as she had to come to the door acting surprised multiple times throughout the day. We would secretively leave her bouquets of wild flowers from the pasture or pretty yellow dandelions on the door step, knock on the door, and then run and hide. I know now that she could hear us giggling as we watched from behind a tree or around the corner of the the house, loving the surprised reaction she would have for us each time! Here is my Happy May Day Basket to all of you! Have a great day. Ms. Grey

COVID Update March 20, 2020 Today teachers and instructional staff began the process of planning for instructional lessons and discussing professional learning needs. Online learning is still scheduled to start on March 30th! Plans are being made to get devices and tools to students and secure opportunities for internet access. Teachers will begin meeting virtually in small groups and as a whole staff on Monday, March 23 on a daily basis and will be communicating to families later next week as things are rolled out. Some parents and students have asked about getting personal items from school. At this time, USD #338 is only allowing essential staff to enter the building. We will continue to assess the risks of letting others into the building and will determine when it is safe to allow students to retrieve personal items. If your child is needing medication left at school or an item that will be utilized during online learning to be successful, please contact one of the district offices and we will get the item and hand it off at a meeting point outside the building. These measures help to keep our essential staff safe and healthy. Have a good weekend! Dr. Hanzlicek #DragonPRIDE
Hello dragon family from Ms. Grey. First of all, I want to say how much I miss all of you. I hope everyone is well and adapting to a new normal for now. The staff is working hard to prepare some guidance for parents and to develop a learning plan for all of our students. Parents, rest assured, we will be here for you every step of the way. Information will be coming out later next week detailing this work. I know many questions have been asked about getting student items from the building. We are working on a plan for that as well. Right now everything is still locked down and safe. As we move forward please, please be safe following all KDHE guidance, find ways to reconnect with family in a whole new light, be patient, and rest assured we are thinking about all of you. These are stressful, uncertain times for all of us, but I truly believe we will all work together coming out on the other side better from the experience. Tell your children we miss them and hope to see them, at least virtually, soon! Ms Grey
Dr. Hanzlicek's COVID-19 Update March 19, 2020. Districts received guidance from the KSDE task force on the new deliverance of instruction today. Our lead teachers, high school counselor, special education teachers, Ms. Grey, and Dr. Hanzlicek met virtually to begin planning for instruction that will begin on March 30th. This group will meet virtually again tomorrow morning to discuss a calendar of events that will structure our planning process. Tomorrow, Dr. Hanzlicek and Ms. Grey will conduct the first virtual faculty meeting. This will be our first step to test connections as we begin to figure out how to connect virtually as a collaborative group. This meeting will allow lead teachers the opportunity to share planning thus far and questions to be answered as we move forward in the planning process. More communication was made today to companies that can help us support online learning as a district along with ways to filter content on devices that are district owned. Plans are moving forward to put an access point for an internet connection in the north parking lot. Students and parents/guardians will be able to connect when sitting in the parking lot. KDHE guidelines of social distancing will have to be followed during the access but this will be an option for those who do not have an internet connection or internet access that is unstable. We will continue to work so that every student has access to a internet connection. Also today, local fire, ambulance, and police met to discuss protocols in the case of emergency uses of the district building. Included in our discussion was the new playground ban enforcement. It is my hope that our Dragon Family is practicing the 6 ft. social distancing and staying safe. Thank you to all those who continue to work hard to support our school family. Talk to you tomorrow! #DragonPRIDE
Thank you Keith Jeffers, Jefferson County Emergency Management for sharing this resource for families. http://bit.ly/COVID19FamilyResource

School Counseling Week Feb. 3-7 perfect time to recognize Kansas’ 1,299 licensed public school counselors. (Ann Marie Busch, KSDE, 2020) TOPEKA — National School Counseling Week, which takes places Monday, Feb. 3, through Friday, Feb. 7, highlights the tremendous impact the nearly 1,300 licensed public school counselors in Kansas have in helping students achieve success. More than 100,000 school counselors across the country, including 1,299 licensed public school counselors in Kansas, will be participating in the week’s festivities. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) sponsors the week. School counselors provide students with academic, college and career help and social-emotional development. The theme for this year’s celebration is “School Counselors: Helping Build Better Humans.” The Kansas vision for education, announced in 2015, has placed a greater emphasis on social-emotional growth. School mental health also has been a critical piece. Since the 2017-2018 school year, the number of school counselors has increased 11% (132 counselors) – from 1,167 counselors to 1,299. The American School Counselor Association is a worldwide nonprofit organization based in Alexandria, Virginia. It was founded in 1952 and supports school counselors’ efforts to help students focus on academic, personal/social and career development. For more information on ASCA, visit www.schoolcounselor.org. The Kansas School Counselor Association (KSCA) has been an active organization since 1965. ASCA serves as the parent organization for the KSCA. For more information on the KSCA, visit www.ksca1.org/.
