As we prepare for activities I would like to take the time to emphasize the importance of good sportsmanship. KSHSAA has implemented a citizenship and sportsmanship rule 52. Art. 1: SPORTSMANSHIP is a general way of thinking and behaving. The following sportsmanship policy items are listed below for clarification: • Be courteous to all (participants, coaches, officials, staff and fans). • Know the rules, abide by and respect the official’s decisions. • Win with character and lose with dignity. • Display appreciation for good performance regardless of the team. • Exercise self-control and reflect positively upon yourself, team and school. • Permit only positive sportsmanlike behavior to reflect on your school or its activities. Citizenship/Sportsmanship Rule 52-1-1c prohibits victory celebrations on the playing surface at the conclusion of a contest. We look forward to your continued support and encouragement for our student athletes. |

The following messages on success and failure are items that I have collected over the years. I believe the message and the quotes do a good job of expressing the importance of placing the team first. We are all aware of the importance of this, but it is something that is often overlooked. We look forward to the upcoming season and wish our teams the best of luck. If you have a question or a concern do not hesitate to call me. Rod Bunde
It’s no accident that things are more likely to go your way when you stop worrying about whether you’re going to win or lose and focus our full attention on what’s happening right this moment. Vow to create an environment based on the principles of selflessness and compassion. “Author unknown”
Like life, sports are messy and unpredictable. The trick is to experience each moment with a clear mind and open heart. “Author unknown”
Holzman school of management: Lesson one: Don’t let anger cloud the mind. Lesson two: Awareness is everything. Lesson three: The power of WE is stronger than the power of me.
Bill Cartwright said it best: Most teams have guys who want to win, but aren’t willing to do what it takes. What it takes is to give yourself over to the team and play your part. That may not always make you happy, but you’ve got to do it. Because when you do, that’s when you win.
I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour—his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear—is that moment when he has worked his heart out and lies exhausted on the field of battle VICTORIOUS!” -Vince Lombardi
“Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” - Winston Churchill SELFISHNESS: The Cold Within “Six men were trapped by circumstances in bleak and bitter cold. Each one possessed a stick of wood, or so the story’s told. The dying fire in need of logs, the first man held his back, because of the faces round the fire, he noticed one was black. The second man was not one of the own local church, and couldn’t bring himself to give the first his stick of birch. The poor man sat in tattered clothes and gave his coat a hitch. Why should he give up his log to warm the idle rich? The rich man sat and thought of all the wealth he had in store, and how to keep what he had earned from the lazy, shiftless poor. The black man’s face spoke revenge, and the fire passed from his sight. Because he saw in his stick of wood a chance to spite the white. The last man of this forlorn group did not except for gain, only to those who gave to him and how he played the game. Their logs held tight in death’s still hands was proof of human sin. They didn’t die from the cold without, the died from The Cold Within.” Author unknown
