International Walk to School Day
October 8, 2008
by Susan Grey
We are planning our “Walk to School Day” in coordination with the International Walk to School Day on October 8th. In coordination with this effort, our physical education instructors and classroom teachers will be reinforcing pedestrian safety rules and tips throughout the month of October.
Every year nearly 600 children are killed as pedestrians. Most of these children are struck by cars. Children are particularly vulnerable to pedestrian death because they are exposed to traffic threats that exceed their cognitive, developmental, behavioral, physical and sensory abilities. Children are impulsive and have difficulty judging speed, spatial relations, and distance. Auditory and visual acuity, depth perception and proper scanning ability develop gradually and do not fully mature until at least age 10.
The morning events will begin at the park where all buses will unload for the day. Walkers and children being delivered by parents can meet us at the park. We will have school breakfast available at the shelter starting at 7:30. PTO is generously furnishing a breakfast muffin or peanut butter & jelly sandwich, grapes, and juice or milk for all students. Adult leaders will then review pedestrian safety tips with groups of children prior to walking the group to school.
Volunteers would be welcomed as crossing guards, student group leaders, breakfast help, etc. Please notify the Elementary Office if you plan on attending as a volunteer - 945-3221.
