Middle School Update

by Trista Gish

Dear Students and Parents,

It is second semester in the Middle School!  The Middle School staff wanted to review several expectations, as well as a few changes, with you as we begin this new semester.  Though we hit a few rough patches first semester, we feel the students pulled together as a group and worked hard to show their positive behaviors, maturity, and responsibility.   To reward the efforts of their hard work, middle school students who ended the quarter with four strikes or less were treated to pizza and a movie.  Additionally, all eligible students will be able to participate in a winter dance. We are proud of what the students accomplished!  We know that we can expect to see this same effort throughout the remainder of this school year.

We want to continue to reward students who choose to make a conscious effort to show maturity and responsibility.  For this reason, future Dragon Activities will reflect these expectations.  Third and fourth quarter activities will require students to end each nine-week period with four strikes or fewer in able to attend the Dragon Activity for the quarter.  This means that if a student receives more than four strikes, but has them removed for consecutive days without earning strikes, they will be eligible for the activity, as long as their strike total on the last day of the quarter is four or less.  (Students earning ten or more strikes, therefore serving a Saturday School, will be ineligible, regardless of ending strike total.  Students serving one or more in-school-suspension(s) will also be ineligible, regardless of ending strike total.)  Dragon Activities are an incentive to entice students to choose to make good decisions regarding their behavior and responsibilities.  We feel students who earn more than four strikes, and do not work to have them removed should not be rewarded.

Based on past quarters, we do not feel that this change will affect many students negatively.  However, we do feel that that this change will make some students more apt to make a more conscious effort to make good choices.  If you have any concerns or questions please contact a member of the middle school staff or Susan Grey.

 Thank-you for your continued support,
